User Prompts
Sep 25, 2025
User prompts in AI are instructions or inputs that guide the model's response.
How It Works
A user prompt tells the AI:
- What task to perform
- What format to use
- The level of detail to provide
- The style or tone to use
Good output is determined by how clear and specific a user prompt is. For example:
- Bad - Explain how to fix a washing machine
- Better - Explain how to fix a 2003 Beko washing machine that is vibrating too much
- Best - I have limited experience in DIY. Explain in simple steps how to fix a 2003 Beko washing machine that is vibrating too much.
In the final prompt we provide context and constraints:
- Context - Gives background
- Restraints - Limits output to specified requirements
User prompts work within a prompt hierarchy. To learn more about this please see the system prompts academy article from the left menu.
Types of User Prompts
| # | Type | Description |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Instructional | Step-by-step instructions |
| 2 | Informational | Facts or explanations |
| 3 | Creative | Generate something original |
| 4 | Analytical | Analyze, compare, or evaluate ideas |
| 5 | Transformational | Rewrite or reformat text or code |
| 6 | Role Play | Simulate a character or persona |
| 7 | Task | Produce usable content or output |
| 8 | Reflective | Support personal reflection |
| 9 | Exploratory | Explore new ideas |
| 10 | Meta Prompts | Prompting to improve a prompt |
| 11 | Scenario | Generate responses to real-life situations |
| 12 | Comparative | Evaluate choices |
| 13 | Simulation | Simulate how an idea works |
| 14 | Planning | Provide action steps |
| 15 | Diagnostic | Identify problems and provide solutions |
| 16 | Evaluation | Request feedback |
| 17 | Self Help | Provide compassion, advice, or guidance |
